Luci Romberg Interview

Luci 600

Lucia (Luci) Royce Romberg, 30, is a professional stuntwoman and freerunner with Tempest Freerunning based in Los Angeles. Tempest is an 11-person strong crew who come from various types of athletic disciplines. Some of the members are the ‘go-to’ people when Hollywood film Directors are looking for stuntmen and women to attack the gnarlier physical aspects of their latest film. They’ve been involved TV shows like House, 24 with Kiefer Sutherland, The Mentalist, a shit load of blockbuster movies and the bread and butter household brands, like Mazda, MacDonalds and Mountain Dew. Tempest have just released a new parkour video ‘Represent’. This is what Luci had to say when I caught up with her during a gap in her busy schedule earlier this week.

“We all know how difficult it is to make a living as a professional freerunner so it is important to stick together and help one another out”

What are you up to at the moment?
I’m in Los Angeles at my desk with my Jack Russell, Harley, on my lap. When I’m not sitting here I’m a professional stuntwoman and Tempest freerunner.

Nice! Do you have any brands sponsoring the Tempest crew?
I am sponsored by Lululemon. They have amazing products and they are an amazing company!

What difference has having sponsors made to you freerunning?
It is important to be able to train and work in comfortable and well made clothes. Lululemon pants are seriously all I wear now, it would be amazing to be sponsored by a shoe company because shoes are obviously important in freerunning! We haven’t had any offers yet but we’ll continue to train, work hard and hopefully be sponsored by another amazing company that we believe in.

What makes Tempest different to other freerunning crews?
We’ve been around for a while now, over 5 years, and we truly are a family. We train together, some of us live together, we succeed together and we fail together. We are all best friends and we have each other’s backs no matter what. We all know how difficult it is to make a living as a professional freerunner so it is important to stick together and help one another out.

Where were you born?
Denver, Colorado

Where do you live now?
Hollywood, California

What has been your biggest lesson learned in life so far?
Don’t ever give up. If you have a dream, go for it. Don’t let anyone, especially yourself, stand in your way of what you want to accomplish.

If you could secretly get away with 1 thing and no one would ever find out, what do you think you’d do?
I would highjack a NASA space shuttle and fly to the moon.

Sum up your outlook on life in 10 words or less…
Life and love are gifts! Live it to the fullest!

What are you most looking forward during the remainder of 2012?
I have 2 family reunions coming up. One for my family and one for my boyfriend, Chad’s family. Family is so important and I am so fortunate to have such a close and amazing one.

Do you have a party trick?
I really don’t, but I’m pretty good at beer pong.

As well as freerunning in the rad new Tempest video (below) you also directed it, how easy was it to combine the two during filming?
Performing in the video was the easiest part. The directing was a lot more difficult. Our time at the location was limited and we had a lot of athletes to shoot so trying to keep people on task and ready to go was definitely a challenge. On the day, I was really stressed out and overwhelmed but when I look back it was an amazing experience and I’m glad I had Chad by my side to help me through it. Chad deserves all the credit for that video! Without him it absolutely would not have turned out the way it did.

You have a impressive stunt career, what makes you strive to be the best at what you do?
My parents were both collegiate athletes and are successful people so they hold my brother, sister, and I to a high standard. My parents are my idols and I can’t thank them enough for all the amazing opportunities and support they have given me. I try very hard not to compare myself to others. I want to be the best that I can personally be.

What’s the worst injury you’ve had from stunting whilst filming?
I have been very fortunate so far. I have broken my jaw training but I have not been seriously injured while filming. Just the typical bumps, bruises and scrapes. Having said that, I am headed to Georgia next week for a car hit, so wish me luck!

Can you name‐drop some of the biggest films/productions you’ve been involved with?
Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull, Zombieland, The Green Lantern, Project X, Glee, NCIS, Criminal Mind, Ted (coming out soon), The Warren Files (coming out some time next year), etc.

What are you most proud of in your personal life?
My friends and family. I am so lucky to have such an incredible and supportive group of people around me.

What makes you sad?
Animals being killed and mistreated.

What makes you happy?
Freerunning with friends

What is your favourite smell?
Chad’s cologne (Chrome)

Who do you most admire and why?
I would have to say my parents for allowing me to have the freedom and for giving me undying support in the pursuit of making my dreams come true! If it wasn’t for my parents there is no way I would be where I am today.

What project are you going to be working on next?
I’m working on a web series called ‘Aim High’ tomorrow and then next week I am working on the ‘Identity’ film in Atlanta.

What do you hope is in store for Tempest in the future?
I hope we can continue to inspire kids and adults to fall in love with freerunning. Freerunning has changed my life in every way and has done so much for me that I hope every person in the world gets the opportunity to experience true freedom.

If someone said Hey, I’m giving you unlimited money, what film would you make and what would it be called!’?
I don’t know exactly how it would go but it would definitely be an action film with a kickass female lead. She would have gnarly parkour skills, martial arts, and would be an all around badass!

What do you hope viewers can take away from watching the latest Tempest video?
My goal was to inspire the viewers to realise the unity that freerunners have. We have our own language and our own way of viewing the world. “Parkour vision”. I wanted to unite the teams of the world and let them know that we, as Tempest, respects what they do and what they stand for. The goal of the video was unity and respect! REPRESENT!!

What has been your single most memorable sports experience?
I would have to say competing in the Red Bull Art of Motion. I have been so fortunate to have competed in 8 international competitions so far and each one seems to get more awesome! I am so lucky to be able to compete on the same platform as some of the best freerunners in the world. I have come out as Best Female in every competition and my dream is to someday have a separate competition for females.

What 1 thing would make your life better?
Having a younger body. I wouldn’t trade having the knowledge and experience that I have but it just takes longer to warm up these days, haha! I would love to have the 18 year old body with the 30 year old mind.

When you’re not directing, freerunning and stunting what might we find you getting up to?
I LOVE to travel and I do a lot of it. Chad, my family and I just got back from a 3 week vacation to Hong Kong, Bali, and the Philippines. We had a blast. I am fortunate enough to have traveled all over the world and I hope I can continue to travel.

“I have been very fortunate so far. I have broken my jaw training but have not been seriously injured while filming. Just the typical bumps, bruises and scrapes. Having said that, I am headed to Georgia next week for a car hit…”

What are you listening to over and over on your iPod at the moment?
Skrillex!! I love him!! (check out the Skrillex video on the right-hand side of Luci’s interview)

If a genie gave you 1 wish to use to improve the production/film-making industry, what would it be?
I’d wish for stronger SAG-AFTRA (American Federation of TV and Radio Artists & Actors Screen Guild to you and I) contracts , so that stunters and actors were compensated with what they deserve on each job.

Tell us a secret…
I have 4 tattoos

What’s the most embarrassing thing that’s ever happened to you?
I was auditioning for the talent show in 3rd grade and I was doing a press handstand and right in the middle of it I farted. The entire class laughed at me and then I started laughing and my arms collapsed and I fell in my face.

Tell us the first thing that comes to mind when you see the following:

My Favourite Album is: depends on the mood I’m in. I like Drake a lot!
My pet peeve is: when people don’t wave when you let them over in traffic.
Imminent Danger is: trying to jaywalk in Los Angeles
The swear word I use the most is: shit

Where will your fans be able to see Tempest next?
Spiderman! My teammate, David Elson, was Andrew Garfield’s stuntman in the upcoming ‘The Amazing Spiderman’ film

Finish this sentence: “Nobody knows this but sometimes I…… get addicted to watching Discovery ID!!”
